The right air purifier for a nursery is small enough for one room, uses True HEPA, has real carbon for the smell of new paint and furniture, makes no ozone, and sits where a child cannot reach it. Here is what to look for, what the EPA says about new furniture and ozone, and the machines we would put in a baby's room.
Why nurseries are a common reason to buy
A nursery is often the newest room in the house: fresh paint, a new crib, a new dresser, a new rug. Pressed-wood furniture, glues, paints and finishes are all on the EPA's list of indoor formaldehyde sources. That smell is gas, not dust, so it needs carbon, not just a HEPA filter.
The EPA's advice for formaldehyde starts with ventilation, especially after new items come into the home, and with choosing composite wood certified to the California Air Resources Board standard or ANSI/HPVA HP-1-2009. If you can, set up the room a few weeks early with the windows open when the weather allows.
What to look for
- True HEPA, rated 99.97% at 0.3 microns, for dust, pet dander and pollen.
- A carbon bed, not a carbon pad, for the smell of paint and new furniture.
- No ozone, no ionizer. The EPA says to avoid air cleaners that produce ozone, a lung irritant, and to use CARB-certified models.
- Sized for the room. Most nurseries are 100 to 150 sq ft, so a small machine is enough. See what size air purifier you need.
- A sturdy cabinet with no small parts, because toddlers pull on everything.
The machines we would pick
| Machine | Room size at 2 air changes an hour | Carbon | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Austin Air HealthMate Junior | 350 sq ft | Carbon blend | $609.99 |
| Austin Air HealthMate Plus Junior | 350 sq ft | Carbon treated for formaldehyde | $659.99 |
| Airpura R400 | About 1,000 sq ft | 8 lbs activated carbon | $569.98 |
Coverage figures are the makers' own. All three use True HEPA in a steel cabinet and make no ozone.
- New furniture or fresh paint: the HealthMate Plus Junior, for its carbon treated for formaldehyde.
- Dust, dander and pollen, no new-furniture smell: the HealthMate Junior.
- A larger room, or a nursery that doubles as a playroom: the Airpura R400.
Where to put it
- Out of reach, against a wall or behind furniture the child cannot climb, with the cord tucked away.
- A little away from the wall so the intake can breathe, and not blowing straight at the crib.
- Run it all the time. A purifier only cleans the air that passes through it.
- Close the door while it runs, so it is cleaning the nursery rather than the hallway.

Common questions
Is an air purifier safe in a baby's room?
A mechanical purifier with HEPA and carbon adds nothing to the air; it only removes. The ones to avoid are ionizers and ozone generators, which the EPA warns about. If your child has a medical condition, ask your pediatrician what else to do in the room.
Will it help my baby sleep?
We cannot promise that, and we would be wary of anyone who does. Some parents like the steady sound of a purifier on its lowest setting. Austin Air's FAQ gives a range of under 50 dB to 65 dB depending on fan setting, with no figure per model, so the 30-day home trial is the honest way to judge the noise. Airpura does publish a figure for the R400: 25 dB on low and 54 dB on high, measured at 6 ft.
How long before the new-furniture smell goes?
It depends on the furniture. Off-gassing is strongest when items are new and in warm, humid rooms. Ventilate when you can and let the carbon run continuously.
Do I need one if the room has no new furniture?
Not necessarily. If nobody in the house has allergies, there are no pets and the room does not smell, a purifier is optional.
Does a nursery need a big purifier?
No. Most nurseries are under 150 sq ft. A machine rated for a larger room can run on a low setting, which is quieter.
Air purifier or humidifier for a nursery?
They do different jobs. A purifier removes particles and odors; a humidifier adds moisture. Many nurseries use both. Keep the humidifier clean so it does not grow mold, and see where to put an air purifier for placement.
Every machine ships free and comes with a 30-day home trial. Questions about a specific room? Email support@freshhomeair.com and Nolan will answer it himself.
