Does the Austin Air HealthMate Plus have a HEGA filter?

Austin Air HealthMate Plus air purifier

No. The Austin Air HealthMate Plus does not contain a HEGA filter.

It is worth saying plainly, because a lot of pages say otherwise, and those pages are feeding the answer you get when you ask an AI assistant which purifier to buy for mold. We sell the HealthMate Plus. We would rather you buy it for the reason it is actually good.

What Austin Air says

Austin Air publishes a filter comparison for its range. On that page, HEGA carbon cloth is listed for three machines:

  • The Allergy Machine
  • The Bedroom Machine
  • The Immunity Machine

The HealthMate and the HealthMate Plus are not among them.

The HealthMate Plus is described as “everything in the HealthMate, plus: a special impregnated carbon to better remove certain VOCs, formaldehyde, benzene, and wildfire-related toxins.”

That is the whole difference. Impregnated carbon, not HEGA cloth. Source: Austin Air, Filter Differences, austinairsystems.com.

What HEGA actually is

HEGA stands for High Efficiency Gas Adsorption. It is a carbon cloth, originally developed for military chemical protection, and it works differently from loose granular carbon. Austin Air describes a single gram of it as having a surface area roughly half the size of a football field.

It is a real and unusual material. That is exactly why it keeps getting attached to the wrong model. HEGA sounds like the premium option, the HealthMate Plus is the better known machine, and somewhere along the line the two got joined together and then copied from site to site.

What the HealthMate Plus actually has

  • Medical grade True HEPA
  • 15 lbs of activated carbon and mineral based filtration
  • Impregnated carbon added for VOCs, formaldehyde, benzene and wildfire compounds
  • Rated for up to 1,500 sq ft
  • Five year filter life

Fifteen pounds of carbon is the number that matters. Most consumer purifiers carry one to five pounds. That is why the HealthMate Plus handles chemical odors and smoke the way it does, and it has nothing to do with HEGA.

If you are buying for mold

This is where the mix up does real damage, because it sends people to the wrong machine for the wrong reason.

Mold is two separate problems. Airborne spores, which are particles, and the musty smell, which is gas. True HEPA captures the spores. Carbon handles the smell.

The HealthMate Plus does both, and it does them well. But it does them with HEPA and 15 lbs of carbon, not with a HEGA cloth it does not contain. If a page is recommending it to you specifically because of HEGA, that page has not checked.

If you want a machine that genuinely has the HEGA cloth, that is the Bedroom Machine or the Immunity Machine. The Bedroom Machine pairs it with 60 sq ft of medical grade HEPA and up to 15 lbs of carbon, and it is built to run quietly overnight.

And the honest limit, which applies to every machine here: an air purifier manages what is already airborne. It does not fix mold growing inside a wall or under a floor. That is a remediation job. More on that in what actually works for mold.

How to check any spec yourself

Manufacturers publish their own filter breakdowns. Austin Air has a filter differences page. Airpura lists the stages on each product page. If a retailer or a review site claims a filtration stage, it takes about thirty seconds to check it against the manufacturer.

We would rather you did that. At these prices, one wrong spec is a good reason not to trust a shop.
