The Standard in Chemical and VOC Filtration for Chemically Sensitive Individuals

The Austin Air HealthMate Plus® is engineered for individuals who cannot tolerate trace levels of airborne chemicals, formaldehyde, VOCs, or synthetic off-gassing. Where standard air purifiers stop at particulate removal, the HealthMate Plus goes further — combining true medical-grade HEPA with an enhanced carbon blend specifically formulated to capture the chemical compounds most problematic for sensitive individuals.

This is not a consumer-grade product. It is a serious filtration system built for people with real chemical burden.

Full specifications filtration stages, filter life, construction, coverage

Filtration System — 4 Stages

Stage 1 — Large Particle Pre-Filter
A mechanical pre-filter captures larger airborne particles — dust, hair, and debris — before they can reduce the efficiency of downstream filter stages. This extends the life of the entire filter assembly.

Stage 2 — Medium Particle Pre-Filter
A secondary pre-filter layer targets finer particles including mold spores and fine dust, protecting the HEPA and carbon stages from premature loading.

Stage 3 — 15 lbs of Enhanced Carbon Blend (The Chemical Defense Core)
This is what separates the HealthMate Plus from standard air purifiers. The enhanced carbon blend is designed to address two categories of airborne chemical contamination:

  • Activated carbon adsorbs VOCs, gaseous chemicals, pesticides, fumes, and odors at the molecular level through physical adsorption
  • impregnated carbon specifically targets chemicals that activated carbon alone handles poorly — including formaldehyde and ammonia. These are among the most common triggers for individuals with MCS, and their removal requires a different adsorbent material

At 15 lbs, the enhanced carbon charge is substantially heavier than the media used in most residential air purifiers, which typically contain 1–5 lbs of carbon. Greater carbon mass means greater adsorption capacity and a longer effective service life before saturation.

Stage 4 — True Medical-Grade HEPA
Rated to capture 99.97% of airborne particles at 0.3 microns — the most penetrating particle size. Removes fine particulate matter, biological contaminants, allergens, and smoke particles. The HEPA used by Austin Air meets the same specification standard used in medical and laboratory environments.

Filter Lifespan — 5 Years

Austin Air backs this with a written 5-year filter guarantee. Most residential purifiers require filter replacement every 6–12 months. The HealthMate Plus is designed to operate for five years before the filter assembly requires replacement, significantly reducing total cost of ownership and eliminating the frequent disruption of filter change cycles.

Construction

The HealthMate Plus is built with an all-steel housing. There is no plastic shell. This matters for chemically sensitive users: plastic housings can off-gas VOCs and plasticizers into the air stream, counteracting the purpose of the purifier. The steel construction is inert and does not contribute airborne contamination. The unit uses a 360-degree air intake, drawing air from all sides simultaneously for efficient room circulation.

No Ionizer. No Ozone. No UV.

The HealthMate Plus is a mechanical filtration system only. It produces no ozone, generates no ions, and emits no UV radiation. For individuals with MCS, ionizers and ozone-generating technology are common reactivity triggers. The HealthMate Plus eliminates that variable entirely.

Coverage

Air Changes per Hour Coverage Area
1x per hour Up to 1,500 sq ft
2x per hour Up to 750 sq ft

For chemically sensitive individuals, 2 or more air changes per hour is generally recommended to maintain lower chemical concentrations in the breathing zone.

Who This Is For

  • Individuals diagnosed with or experiencing symptoms of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS)
  • Those who react to formaldehyde, ammonia, cleaning products, fragrances, or synthetic materials
  • Anyone in new construction or recently renovated spaces with active off-gassing
  • Individuals who need to reduce their total chemical body burden in their primary living environment
  • Those who require no secondary chemical output — no ozone, no ions
  • Individuals who have tried consumer-grade air purifiers and found them inadequate

Why the HealthMate Plus Over the Standard HealthMate: The standard HealthMate uses activated carbon only. The HealthMate Plus adds a second adsorbent specifically to address formaldehyde and ammonia — two VOCs that activated carbon does not effectively capture. For customers with MCS or significant chemical sensitivity, the Plus configuration is the clinically relevant choice.

Manufactured in Buffalo, New York. Covered by Austin Air's 5-year mechanical and filter guarantee.

The model built for chemical sensitivity

The carbon here is chemically impregnated, so it breaks down the compounds that plain activated carbon only holds onto.

Four-stage filtration

  1. 1 Large particle pre-filterdust, hair and pet dander
  2. 2 Medium particle pre-filtermold, spores and pollen
  3. 3 Impregnated carbon blendup to 15 lb, chemically treated to break down formaldehyde, ammonia and VOCs
  4. 4 Medical-grade True HEPA60 sq ft of media, particles to 0.3 microns

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before you buy.

The HealthMate is rated for spaces up to 1,500 sq ft. For typical bedrooms (300–500 sq ft), it runs quietly below capacity and exchanges the air more frequently — which extends filter life and reduces noise. For open-plan living areas up to 1,500 sq ft, it handles the space effectively on speed 2–3.

Austin Air filters are rated for 5 years under normal residential use — and often last longer when running below the rated coverage capacity. The long filter life is a direct result of the large carbon bed (6.5–15 lbs depending on model): more carbon means more capacity before saturation. Replacement filters are available on our filters page.

Austin Air units run a 3-speed centrifugal fan. Speed 1 is quiet enough for sleeping. Speed 2 is a consistent low hum that most people find unobtrusive. Speed 3 moves the most air and is best for daytime use or for clearing a room quickly after cooking, smoke, or a high-pollen day.

No. This unit uses only mechanical filtration — no ionizer, no UV, no ozone generator. It is safe for people with asthma, chemical sensitivity, and other respiratory conditions where ozone is a known irritant. This is a firm design standard across the entire Austin Air lineup.

Yes — the Plus models are specifically designed for chemical sensitivity. Their activated carbon is chemically impregnated, which lets it break down the low-molecular-weight VOCs, formaldehyde, and amine-class compounds that are primary MCS triggers rather than only adsorbing them. Standard HEPA-only units and even standard carbon units do not address these compound classes. Environmental medicine specialists have recommended this unit by name for MCS patients.

Yes — and it's recommended. Austin Air units are built for continuous operation. The motors are rated for it and many customers run them year-round without issues. Continuous operation also gives you the best air quality results: the air is cycled more frequently, keeping particulate and VOC levels consistently low. Running the unit continuously at a lower speed is better than running it intermittently on high.

Austin Air units ship free directly from the manufacturer in Buffalo, NY. Most orders arrive in 3 to 7 business days, including 1 to 3 business days to process. You will receive a tracking number once your order ships. Large units may ship via freight — if so, we will contact you to arrange a delivery window.

Yes. No ionizer, no ozone, no UV. Austin Air machines have been used in clinical trials at Johns Hopkins University and in a Cincinnati Children's Hospital study of children with asthma, so they are built for exactly this setting.
