What It's Designed For

The T400 is engineered specifically for tobacco smoke environments — a filtration challenge that general-purpose purifiers are not built to handle. Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals and gases, tar compounds, and fine particulate matter including at least 60 carcinogens. The T400 addresses all three components: a dedicated TarBarrier pre-filter captures tar before it fouls the carbon bed; the activated carbon adsorbs the chemical and gas phase; a HEPA Barrier post-filter captures fine smoke particles. Sized for rooms up to approximately 1,000 sq ft.

Filtration System

TarBarrier Pre-Filter — Dedicated tar capture stage that removes tar compounds before they reach the carbon bed. Works similarly to a cigarette filter mechanism. Extends carbon service life dramatically in active smoking environments. Replace on schedule.

Carbon Bed — Activated Carbon — Adsorbs chemicals and odor from tobacco smoke, including benzene and toluene. The carbon is calibrated for the tobacco smoke chemical profile.

HEPA Barrier — 95% @ 1 micron — Captures fine smoke particles, PM2.5, and biological particulate. Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) particles are fine enough to require HEPA-rated filtration to remove effectively.

Airpura filter life varies by model and usage. Airpura rates the carbon filter at about two years of continuous use in a typical home. HEPA and pre-filters have their own replacement schedules. No. This unit uses only mechanical filtration — no ionizer, no UV, no ozone generator. That matters for people with asthma or chemical sensitivity, because ozone is a known airway irritant. Airpura does build UV-equipped machines, and they are gathered in the UV air purifiers collection — this is not one of them.

Perfect Size for a Smaller Smoke Problem

Needed smoke filtration for a single room without a full-size unit. The T400 fits perfectly and handles the job completely. Great build quality for the size.

Good smoke control for a smaller space

I was between the T400 and a larger model and went with the T400 for my den, which is about 350 square feet. It keeps the smoke odor well under control and runs quietly enough that it doesn't interrupt TV watching. The build feels solid and the controls are simple. I might eventually upgrade for larger coverage but for this room it does exactly what I needed.

Finally solved the smoke odor problem

My partner smokes and despite keeping it to one room the smell was spreading everywhere. The T400 changed that almost overnight. The carbon formulation designed for tobacco compounds is clearly different from generic filters — it actually grabs the smell rather than just masking it.
