What It's Designed For

The C400 is Airpura's compact chemical filtration unit — built around a broad-spectrum activated carbon bed calibrated for airborne chemical and VOC removal in rooms up to approximately 1,000 sq ft. Where the R400 prioritizes general all-purpose filtration, the C400 is configured specifically for chemical and gas-phase removal — the appropriate specification when VOCs, cleaning chemical vapors, fragrance compounds, or airborne pollutants from indoor sources are the primary air quality concern.

Filtration System

Pre-Filter — Captures large particles at intake. Protects carbon and HEPA stages. Replace annually.

Carbon Bed — Activated Carbon (Broad-Spectrum) — Adsorbs a broad range of household chemicals, gases and odors: VOCs from furniture, flooring, adhesives and paints, cleaning product vapors, fragrance compounds and smoke odor. Over 400 specially blended carbon formulations available for targeted contamination profiles.

HEPA Barrier — 95% @ 1 micron — Removes fine particulate, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, bacteria, and airborne viral particles alongside the chemical filtration stage.

Replacement Filter Bundles

Replacement filters for the 400 series are on our replacement filters page.

Pre-Filter Every 12 months
Carbon Filter Every 2 years
HEPA Barrier Every 12 months

Best For

  • Chemical sensitivity or light MCS in a single room where broad-spectrum carbon is needed
  • Environments with consistent VOC, cleaning chemical, or fragrance contamination
  • Users who need chemical-focused filtration beyond what the all-purpose R400 provides
  • Smaller spaces where the C600's larger capacity is not required

C400 vs. R400: The R400 uses standard all-purpose carbon. The C400 is configured specifically for broad-spectrum chemical and gas-phase removal — the correct choice when chemical filtration is the primary concern. C400 vs. C400 DLX: The C400 DLX uses an impregnated carbon filter, which Airpura says binds chemicals faster than standard carbon. C400 vs. C600: The C600 carries 26 lbs of activated carbon at 560 CFM for larger rooms. The C400 is correctly sized for single-room use.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before you buy.

Airpura rates this machine for up to 1,000 sq ft at two air changes an hour, with 8-foot ceilings. For four air changes, which is what we suggest for smoke, asthma or chemical sensitivity, plan on about 500 sq ft.

Same cabinet, same airflow and the same HEPA Barrier post-filter. The difference is the carbon. The standard model uses activated carbon, which handles most household chemicals, VOCs and odors. The DLX uses impregnated carbon, which Airpura builds for heavier chemical and gas loads. If you are dealing with a specific or heavy chemical source, look at the C400 DLX ($709.98).

  • The C600 ($1,049.98) moves 560 CFM and is rated by Airpura for 2,000 sq ft at two air changes an hour.
  • The C700 ($1,199.98) moves 635 CFM and is rated by Airpura for 2,500 sq ft at two air changes an hour.

Airpura filter life varies by model and usage. Airpura rates the carbon filter at about two years of continuous use in a typical home. HEPA and pre-filters have their own replacement schedules. Replacement filters are available on our filters page. Running the unit below its rated capacity meaningfully extends filter life.

Airpura's sales sheet rates this model at 25 dB on low and 54 dB on high, measured at 6 feet. It has three fan speeds. Most people run it low overnight and turn it up to clear a room quickly. See our quiet bedroom guide for every model's numbers.

No. This unit uses only mechanical filtration — no ionizer, no UV, no ozone generator. That matters for people with asthma or chemical sensitivity, because ozone is a known airway irritant. Airpura does build UV-equipped machines, and they are gathered in the UV air purifiers collection — this is not one of them.

Yes. Austin Air and Airpura units are used by patients with asthma, allergies, and chemical sensitivity. The True HEPA captures particle-class triggers and the activated carbon addresses VOCs, odors, and chemical compounds. No ionizer, no ozone — safe for respiratory conditions. For MCS specifically, the HealthMate Plus or Airpura C600 have the most relevant specifications.

Yes. Airpura units are designed for continuous residential operation. The steel-body construction and quality motor components are built for this use case. The 400 series has three fan speeds, and a low to medium setting suits continuous use. Continuous operation at a moderate speed outperforms intermittent high-speed runs for maintaining consistent indoor air quality.

Airpura units ship free directly from their facility in Montreal, Canada. Most orders arrive in 4 to 9 business days, including 1 to 3 business days to process. You will receive a tracking number once your order ships. Import duties and customs fees are included in the product price — no surprise charges at delivery.

Airpura units carry a 5-year warranty on parts and labor, plus labor-only coverage to 10 years. As an authorized Airpura dealer, Fresh Home Air supports the full manufacturer warranty. Contact us at support@freshhomeair.com for warranty service.

Run it in your home for 30 days. If it is not right, email support@freshhomeair.com and we will send you a prepaid, insured return label. We pay the return shipping, there is no restocking fee, and you get a full refund once the unit is back with us. If it arrives damaged or faulty, email us within 7 days with photos of the item and the packaging. We will send a replacement and collect the original, and you pay nothing.

Yes. No ionizer, no ozone, no UV. Mechanical HEPA and activated carbon only, safe for continuous use in rooms with children and pets.

same quality as C600, more practical size

If you're considering the C600 but have a smaller space, the C400 delivers the same super-dense carbon formulation in a more practical package for medium rooms. I use it in my 900 sq ft apartment and chemical sensitivity triggers are well managed.

performs well, coverage is accurate

Good unit for moderate chemical sensitivity. The 1500 sq ft coverage is accurate — it handles my 1200 sq ft apartment on medium speed. The super-dense carbon is noticeably more effective than standard carbon units I've used previously. Minor note: the fan can be audible on the highest setting.

great for moderate MCS in apartments

I have moderate chemical sensitivity and live in an 1100 sq ft apartment. The C400 covers my space adequately and the specialized carbon handles incoming chemical irritants from neighbors' units and hallways. Very happy with this as a right-sized solution.

right size for a chemically sensitive bedroom

I don't need 2000 sq ft coverage — my bedroom is 450 sq ft and this is where my chemical sensitivity flares most at night. The C400 with its super-dense carbon formulation is perfectly sized and performs the same filtration as the C600 in a smaller package.
