The Problem

Why Most Air Purifiers Make MCS Worse

Ionizers & Ozone Generators

Dozens of popular brands produce ozone or ions as a byproduct — marketed as 'fresh air' but chemically identical to an outdoor air pollutant. For MCS sufferers, this can trigger immediate reactions.

Plastic Off-Gassing

The plastic housings on budget air purifiers off-gas volatile organic compounds, especially when the motor heats up during extended use. You're running a machine that adds to your chemical load.

UV Lamps

UV-C lamps in some purifiers produce trace ozone as a byproduct of irradiation. Many also degrade plastic components over time, releasing additional off-gassing into the treated air.

The Difference

Mechanically Safe. Chemically Inert.

All-Steel Construction

Austin Air and Airpura housings are welded steel — zero plastic in the airflow path. No off-gassing from the machine itself, even during continuous operation.

Zero Ionizers, Zero Ozone, Zero UV

Every product we carry uses HEPA + activated carbon filtration only. No ionizers, no plasma clusters, no UV-C, no ozone generation. Tested and trusted by the MCS community.

Specialty Filters for Chemicals

Airpura's P-series and Austin Air HealthMate Plus include enhanced mineral adsorbents and specialty carbon blends targeting formaldehyde, ammonia, and hundreds of specific VOCs and chemical compounds.

Real Customers

From People Who Live With Chemical Sensitivity

Living with MCS for 12 years, I've tried a lot of purifiers that caused reactions. The Airpura C600 is the first one that doesn't. No ozone, no off-gassing. Finally a store that actually understands what chemically sensitive people need.

I react to almost everything. The HealthMate Plus was recommended by my integrative doctor and I can genuinely say it's made a difference in my symptoms at home. The steel body matters — my old plastic purifier was making things worse.

Finally found a store that carries serious air purifiers for people with real sensitivities. Not the cheap stuff with ionizers. Actual medical-grade machines that understand what's going on in the air.

Common Questions

MCS & Chemical Sensitivity, Answered

Several common features can worsen MCS symptoms: ionizers produce ozone and charged particles; ozone generators directly add an oxidant to the air; UV-C lamps can produce trace ozone as a byproduct; plastic housings off-gas VOCs when heated during motor operation. The safest air purifiers for chemically sensitive individuals use only mechanical HEPA filtration and activated carbon, with steel or metal housings.

HEPA filters capture particles — dust, pollen, mold spores, pet dander — through physical interception. They cannot capture gaseous chemicals. Activated carbon works through adsorption: the porous surface of the carbon captures gas molecules including VOCs, formaldehyde, benzene, and hundreds of other compounds. For MCS, you need both: HEPA for particulate removal and heavy activated carbon for chemical/gas removal.

It uses a naturally occurring mineral adsorbent with high porosity and ion-exchange properties. It's particularly effective at adsorbing formaldehyde, ammonia, and nitrogen-based compounds that activated carbon is less efficient at capturing. Austin Air's HealthMate Plus combines activated carbon with an impregnated mineral adsorbent to address a broader spectrum of chemicals — specifically the compounds most problematic for MCS sufferers.

The main housing and structural components of both Austin Air and Airpura units are steel. Some internal components (fan blades, cord, minor fittings) may contain small amounts of non-structural plastic, but these are not in the primary airflow path. The machines are widely trusted by the MCS community specifically because the steel housing eliminates the off-gassing concern present in fully plastic-cased alternatives.

The right model depends on your primary triggers. For general VOC and chemical sensitivity: Austin Air HealthMate Plus (15 lbs carbon blend) or Airpura C600 (18 lbs carbon). For formaldehyde specifically: Austin Air HealthMate Plus or Airpura V600. For ammonia or nitrogen compounds: Airpura G600.
